CPT Coding for the Emergency Room

Course Description:

This session covers common coding problems in the hospital emergency room. Now that hospitals are paid under the Medicare OPPS system, it is critical that each visit is coded correctly and completely. Coding and documentation techniques for the unique ER environment will be discussed.

Target Audience:

Those who are involved in the coding and billing process for the hospital emergency department including: coding professionals, nursing, billing and finance professionals.

Content for the program will include the following:

• Common Coding problems in the ER such as:

  • Lacerations

  • Fractures

  • Injections

• Evaluation and Management Coding

• Using Modifier -25

• Billing Critical Care Codes in the ER

• CPT vs. HCPCS Level II Codes

• Discuss the appropriate coding and documentation for common services provided in the ER setting.

• Discuss appropriate use of Evaluation and Management codes and use of modifer-25 in the ER setting.

• Define the CPT rules for using Critical Care codes and describe how to use these appropriately in under Medicare’s OPPS rules.

• Discuss how to assure the correct level of HCPCS code (CPT or HCPCS Level II) is being used.
