Course Description:

With the implementation of Outpatient PPS and more focus on medical necessity, diagnosis coding is more important than ever. This session focuses on common diagnosis problems in the emergency room and outpatient setting.

Content for the program will include the following:

• Common diagnoses problem areas such as wounds, fractures, hypertension, signs and symptoms, “rule out” diagnoses.

• Choosing the appropriate diagnosis code for each procedure

• Linking diagnosis to procedure on the HCFA 1500 form (physician billing)

• How to place codes correctly on the UB92 form for payment (hospital billing)

• ICD coding tips

• Coding Clinic rules for outpatient diagnostic coding.

Those who bill or code for either physician services or hospital outpatient services including coders, HIM professionals, business office and finance professionals.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

• Choose the correct ICD-9-CM diagnosis code to match the physician’s diagnosis.

• Link the appropriate diagnosis code on the billing form to assure proper payment.

• Discuss common ICD-9-CM coding mistakes and how to avoid these.

• Discuss official coding guidelines and guidance on outpatient diagnostic coding.
