Perry/Garvin

Jane Perry, is director of communications at the University of Virginia’s International Health Care Worker Safety Center, a world leader in surveillance, research and education on the prevention of occupational exposures to bloodborne pathogens.

Since 1994 Ms. Perry has served as editor of the Center’s journal, Advances in Exposure Prevention, a leading source of information on sharps safety. Ms. Perry has lectured and written extensively on topics related to needle safety. In addition to numerous articles for AEP, she has published in journals such as RN, American Journal of Nursing, Nursing Management, Home Healthcare Nurse and Infection Control Today. She also contributes a regular column on exposure safety to Nursing2001. She co-authored a chapter on bloodborne pathogen exposure for the 2000 edition of the APIC Text of Infection Control and Epidemiology, and was editor of the book Prevention, Management and Chemoprophylaxis of Occupational Exposure to HIV.

Ms. Perry received her B.A. from Scripps College and M.A. from the University of Ottawa.

Michael Garvin, MHA, is a consultant specializing in regulatory compliance.  He was formerly the Safety Engineer at the 900 bed University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for 10 years.  Prior to accepting that position, he served as the Safety and Hazard Control Officer at the University of Wisconsin’s Clinical Science Center, comprised of a 540 bed hospital and over 200 research laboratories.  He holds a Masters of Hospital Administration degree from St. Louis University.  Mike has written for a number of trade journals in the fields of waste and safety management.  His research in such areas as waste management, medical product development and health care safety often is included in major conferences and industry publications.  He also has worked in hospitals for nearly 20 years in the capacity of staff member, department director and administrative assistant.  He can be contacted by calling (319)335-4540.
